Under the direction of the Head of Payroll, the team ensures the timely accurate and efficient operational payroll and pension services for the University, with a particular focus on customer care and effective variable pay processing for a significant proportion of our employees. As the Deputy Payroll Manager, you will be the first point of contact for Schools and Departments for much of the work of the payroll team.
You will supervise the payroll team; lead on delivering the normal monthly payroll cycle and will provide the Head of Payroll with a full audit trail of checks, reports and summary sheet for audit, regulatory compliance and quality control. You will ensure payroll deadlines are met accurately and on time, with a strong attention to detail.
You will deputise for the Head of Payroll as needed, including representing the University externally, presenting briefings and providing training to colleagues in payroll and Human Resources on payroll and pensions administration and changes.
You will line manage payroll officers / administrators, with responsibility for performance, development and work allocation to ensuring the provision of an effective payroll and pension service.
You will promote and maintain good working relations within the team and other areas within the Department, other Professions Service Departments and Academic Departments.

To be successful, you will have significant experience in an operational payroll role within a complex organisation and experience working with Oracle or other comprehensive payroll systems.
You will be able to work on your own initiative, with a strong commitment to customer care and will enjoy working flexibly, engaging and supporting the team throughout each payroll period.
