We are looking for Payroll Manager who will be responsible for the payroll cycle for all of our Homes and Head Office. This role will be part of the Finance team and will work very closely with the People & Culture team however predominantly a stand-alone role, and will need to be the payroll subject matter expert and will provide front line support.
About the opportunity:
As Payroll Manager you will be responsible for:
- Accurately manage monthly payroll for all employees and bank staff, including:
- Overtime, bonuses, staff deductions, statutory payments
- New starters, leavers, salary adjustments
- Generating P45s, P60s, and P11Ds
- Administer company benefits effectively and on time, including pension contributions and private medical insurance
- Act as the first point of contact for all payroll-related queries, ensuring timely investigation and resolution
- Liaise with People & Culture and Home Administrators to gather payroll changes and updates
- Track and analyse payroll trends for monthly reporting; identify risks and implement mitigation steps
- Lead and manage annual payroll events such as salary reviews and year-end tasks (e.g. P11Ds, HMRC submissions)
- Ensure compliance with payroll legislation, data protection standards, and internal policies
- Own and optimise payroll system processes to ensure efficiency, automation, and reliability
- Manage the Time & Attendance system with Home Administrators to ensure accurate payroll data
- Provide and reconcile monthly payroll reports via system and Excel, including submissions to BACS, HMRC, and employees
- Lead the full lifecycle of payroll system migration from Frontier to MHR People First, including:
- Configuration, testing, parallel runs, go-live support
- Gap analysis, data mapping, cleansing, and compliance
- Collaborate with HR, Finance, IT, and external vendors to ensure system compatibility and workflow alignment
- Support the Chief Financial Officer with payroll elements of annual R&D relief claims and grants
- Provide KPI data for reporting purposes
- Undertake project work and other tasks as reasonably required by the Chief Financial Officer
About you:
- You will have strong in-house payroll experience, with a minimum 2 years in a stand-alone payroll position.
- You will have experience of a multi-site operation within care or a similar industry where shift patterns are worked.
- Proven track record of successfully implementing or migrating payroll systems.
- Strong understanding of payroll processes, legislation, and reporting requirements.
- Experience working with multiple payroll software such as Frontier, MHR People First, HRIS, payroll, holiday, and time & attendance management software such as Allocate.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, particularly in data migration and system integration.
- You will be organised with strong communication and influencing skills, an approachable manner, an eye for detail and the ability plan and prioritise and work to tight deadlines.
- You will have the ability to work under pressure, flexibly and consistently.
- You will be a friendly, compassionate, kind, and caring individual.
- You will have good Excel skills, including advanced formulas and data manipulation.
- CIPP or equivalent qualification is desirable.
